What’s The Differences Between A Fully Managed And Self-managed Server Hosting?
Friday, September 3, 2010 13:17You have two different “flavours” of dedicated server depending on how much responsibility you wish to bear on running it.
Unmanaged servers you get full root or remote desktop access to but with a managed server you would only get partial control over.
Fully managed servers are aimed at those who maybe inexperienced, or do not want the hassle of having to completely run all the parts of the server. To make your life easy the provider may offer you some form of control panel to allow you to monitor your server.
So what will the server provider do for you?
So what can imagine from a company that provides you a dedicated server? They will do most things for you within reason, obviously they will setup and install the server for you, and put on any initial software you require. Monitor it for hardware issues and perform preventative maintenance as necessary. You should find that you will not be limited to the amount of support time you have, but if you are using an unfair amount you may be charged or limited.
With an unmanaged server you are expected to know how to run and maintain your server, I say maintain, I really mean keeping all your software and operating system up to date, and keep it secure. Plus all the other daily or weekly tasks you need to perform. Access would be via root or remote desktop, which would all you complete and unrestricted access to your server to do anything you need to do.
Server companies responsibility?
The server host would still be responsible for the hardware of your server, but they might not have any monitoring software installed, so any issues you notice you would need to report to avoid an problems. They will of course install the operating system but this is where there responsibility then stops. You do can get support but the time is limited. Should you really kill your server, it might prove costly to sort the mess out and so may be better getting a format and reinstall done instead. A provider of a dedicated server web like Melbourne should be able to give you the correct options.
Where a managed server perhaps isn’t right you have other options. Sometimes you can get a third option which is a semi managed server, you get more access but still not unrestricted, support is still plentiful but not unlimited or none at all. This can make moving from a fully managed to an unmanaged service easier or just relive some of the hassle of being unmanaged.
